Ok..so maybe we’re alittle bit late on this but I just had to do a feature on The Wizard of Ahhs by American Idol contestant Todrick Hall, starring the amazing Pentatonix , winners of The Sing Off. This video has gone viral but this is not Todrick Hall’s first attempt at making an updated performance out of the Wizard Of Oz. Todrick has been putting on small productions of the Wizard of Oz with new music since he was 17 and he finally found a formula that worked for his Wizard of Oz concept. I have to say this video is absolutely awesome ! Hands down and full of so much creativity. Oh and by the way, did I mention I am a huge Pentatonix fan ?
About two weeks ago, I drove down to Atlanta and saw the last show of the Pentatonix Tour at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. They performed a full two hour show with no breaks completely accapella and I was amazed. It was a packed house and I literally could not get over the fact that there was no instruments during the entire show. Well..ok ..maybe one Cello for Kevin Olusola’s solo where he showed the original talent that helped get him recruited to be in the Pentatonix with his beatboxing while playing the Cello. And then Avi Kaplan busts out with his two note vocal skills…he can actually sing two different notes at the same time !!…AHHH..MMAAAAZZZ…IINNNGG !!! Honestly, this group is truly what the music industry should really be all about, really really talented people putting together great shows for their audience and really showing the fans what their favorite musicians can do in their performances. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. There is a reason why these guys won The Sing Off and its because their talent is one in a million..Period. I rest my case. 🙂
Now on to the food
For this recipe I wanted to capture the Wizard of Oz so I decided to do something that reflected a tornado ; I found out that Kevin from Pentatonix lived in China, can speak fluent Mandarin and loves Chinese food and with that I want to add a Chinese element to the dish as well.
TORNADO CHINESE MARINATED SHRIMP WITH CITRUS GINGER DIPPING SAUCE
-1/2 pack of Filo Dough , shredded or cut into very thin strips
-10 Jumbo Size Raw Shrimp, peeled and veined with tail on
– 1/4 cup Green Onion Chopped
– Kosher Salt
-1/3 Cup Orange Juice
-3 tablespoons fresh Lime Juice
– 1 teaspoon orange zest
– 2 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger
– 1 egg
– 1 teaspoon of Sesame Oil
– 1/4 teaspoon Sugar
– 1 teaspoon Red Pepper flakes
1) In a medium bowl, mix your Shrimp, cilantro , green onion, orange zest and salt. Marinate for 30 minutes.
2) In small bowl, prepare your egg for your egg wash. Preheat the oven to 400
3) Spread out your dough into two inch strips . Dip the shrimp into the egg wash and wrap the dough around it and place on baking sheet.
4) Repeat the process and bake for 14 minutes.
5) Mix your remaining ingredients together for dipping sauce in a separate small bowl. Serve with warm Tornado Shrimp.
