Fabio Canu is originally from Sardinia, Italy and his Italian roots speak loudly when he’s thinking of his favorite foods.

I’m Italian. I love spaghetti with seafood!

I was so excited to hear this because a recipe for Frutti di Mare aka Seafood Spaghetti immediately came to mind. Italy is my favorite place on the planet to visit and eat good food. The amazing regional cuisine, fresh pastas, gelato and fresh seafood always have my heart…and stomach 🙂

For this recipe, I went with a spicy marinara-type sauce and just about any fresh seafood I could get my hands on! Check out the recipe below.

Frutti di Mare Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb clams of choice (be sure to clean well ahead of time)
  • 1/2 lb mussels (be sure to clean well ahead of time)
  • 1 lb medium shrimp peeled with tail on
  • 4 jumbo whole shrimp with head on
  • 1/2 lb calamari ( you can also use scallops here if you prefer)
  • 1/2 cup EVOO, separated in 1/4 cup
  • Pink Himalayan Salt, to taste
  • Ground black pepper, to taste
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 c white wine
  • 1 lb spaghetti pasta (good brand on this)
  • Lemon wedges (optional for serving)
  • Your favorite Arrabbiata or Spicy Marinara Sauce (I used Bertolli Rustic Cut Spicy Marinara)
  • Fresh parsley and basil for garnish, about 1/3 cup

Directions

    1. Cook spaghetti noodles according to package directions. After drained toss with 2 tablespoons of EVOO and set aside. Warm your sauce slowly on the side as well while you cook your seafood so its ready to toss together at the end.
    2. In a sauce pan, add remaining EVOO and saute garlic and onion. Add in the mussels and clams to saute as well for about 2 minutes. Then add the white wine and cover to cook until mussels and clams start to open. (About another 2 minutes)
    3. Add the whole and smaller shrimp and cook for 2 minutes. Make sure all the clams and mussels have opened, and then add the calamari. Cook those for about 45 seconds.
    4. Pink salt and pepper to taste.
    5. Toss your sauce to coat the seafood and then add the cooked pasta and give everything another toss to coat.
    6. Serve in platter or plate of choice. Garnish with basil, parsley, lemon and enjoy!
